History

Essendon Canoe Club has a proud history in the development of Canoeing in Australia. It continues to support canoeing from the beginner to world class athlete.

‘The Canoe Sport in Australia’ by R.N. Chenoweth was written in 1949 and discusses the formation of the Australian Canoe Federation in 1949.  It also provides a brief outline on how canoeing had progressed in each state from the early 1900’s.

Essendon Canoe Club was extremely fortunate in having Fred Jordan to act as our Historian.  His experience and wealth of knowledge concerning the beginning of Canoeing in Australia was extensive. We acknowledge Fred for providing the above document and for Frank Magee for retyping same from the original handwritten material.

Essendon members would be interested to know that our club was initially called the Maribyrnong Canoe Club.
